With studies proving students need increased sleeping hours and professionals demanding learning hours to be at optimal times, several schools have incorporated later school start times. For instance, our high school adjusted the Wednesday start time from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. However, students are likely to negate this change by sleeping later on preceding nights, as they are granted more time to sleep in.
There are a myriad of ways to efficiently utilize the extra time you have in your hands. Avoid using late starts as excuses to sleep later on preceding nights. Instead, plan ahead, sleep earlier, and use the mornings effectively.

1. Exercise. Going on a short run or completing an accessible workout video is a great way to begin your day. The exercises bring a great flow of oxygen into your body and catalyze strong circulation as your heart pumps blood. Take a morning shower and dress for school. You will step into class refreshed, pumped with energy, and fully awake.
2. Stretch/meditate. It’s crucial to calm your mind and body before beginning another day of intense schedules and tasks. Take a moment to breathe, warm-up your body, and compose yourself before the day officially starts. Stretch to your favorite song and alleviate any stress or anxiety. Remember, each new day is a fresh start!
3. Get breakfast with friends. Rigorous courses and commitments can easily cause students to sacrifice spending quality time with friends. Thus, use this extra time in the morning to grab breakfast at a local restaurant together. Create memories all while enjoying a hearty breakfast to support you throughout the day.
4. Pack your own lunch! School days can quickly become mundane. Try something new by packing your favorite menu for lunch! If you’re a beginner, try an easy sandwich. If you’re a pro, you have plenty of recipes to choose from! You’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment and appreciate your tasty meal. 5. Review material. This does not mean cramming your homework last minute. Use your free time in the morning to review previous lectures by examining your notes or homework. Better yet, look ahead to skim new material you’ll soon learn in class. Recalling information and preparing your brain for more lessons is a top practice towards academic success.
Later school start times are perfect opportunities to develop healthy lifestyles for the body, mind, and soul. By sleeping earlier even on nights before later school start times, you’ll sleep sufficient hours and wake up with extra time to strengthen your health and morale!
