- Prepare with supplies and stationary. Organizing your supplies and having your materials ready is key for a fresh start. Pack your backpack the night before or even a few days in advance. Some go-to supplies to purchase include colored pens, pencils, notebooks, highlighters, planners, and backpacks! See Top Picks for Back-To-School for some more ideas.
- Practice your school schedule a week in advance and build your sleep habits. Sleep as you hope to do so in the school year and wake up early to build healthy habits before it’s too late.
- Complete your summer homework ASAP; never wait it off assuming you will be fine later on. Quality work comes with ample time and effort. Don’t test your speed and anxiety. Begin NOW. If you think you can get it done in one week anyway, then try it now to see if you can actually finish the assignment in a week!
- Gain advice regarding your course and teacher from upperclassmen or online sources such as ratemyteachers.com. Learning their style and course summary beforehand is a great advantage and mental preparation for you. (Note: Take all advice and ratings with a grain of salt. They can be biased opinions.)
- Set goals. What are your short term and long term goals? How do you plan to achieve them this year? Write steps you will take to reach your aspirations and commit to them instead of just making a mental note.
After School Starts:
- Read the syllabus carefully. Often, students receive the syllabus and throw it in their binders or rush to simply get it signed and turned in. Keep in mind, this is the ultimate guide regarding the whole class and your teacher’s instructional methods. Don’t allow this valuable information to go to waste!
- Prioritize and cut off all distractions. The last thing you want to do is fail at time management. Read our 7 Essential Habits for Academic Success to incorporate key practices into your efficient lifestyle.
- Complete ALL assignments and any extra credit opportunities starting from the beginning and consistently. Your starting grade sways drastically, and it has a notable impact on the rest of your semester grade. If you start off with an A and maintain this status, you will have a greater leeway with final exams to end with an A (or still a good grade). However, if you begin with a C, you will add significant pressure for your mind and body knowing the lack of cushion space you have for the final grades.
